MOLLUSKS
Digitisation
Digital cataloguing of prominent malacological collections in Austria.
Malacological reference collections provide valuable data for long-term observations and are, particularly within this group of organisms, one of the most important foundations for faunistic documentation and research.
Among the most important collections of recent
mollusks in Austria are
Collections of
Aemilian Edlauer, Walter Klemm (NHMW)
Collections of Friedrich Mahler
(Stift Kremsmünster)
Collections of
Peter Sperling
(Haus der Natur)

Project
As part of the OSCA initiative, work was carried out across institutions at the Haus der Natur, OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH, the University of Vienna, the Tyrolean State Museum, inatura, the Carinthian State Museum, and the Natural History Museum Vienna on the digital cataloging of the specimen collections.
In this process, the collections are to be made accessible on the basis of uniform content and technical standards.
This digital documentation is based on the MIDS levels (Minimum Information about a Digital Specimen) developed as part of DiSSCo.
Objective
The aim is to increase the MIDS level for as many collection objects as possible, to make the collections usable as research infrastructure, to publish the data, and to digitally (photographically) document important series of evidence.
Another goal of the initial phase of this project is to create a meta-catalog of other malacological collections in Austria that are housed at other institutions.
