Projects
OSCA aims to develop a work plan and demonstrate the feasibility of digitizing large collections through selected case studies. Between 2022 and 2024, the mollusk collections (snails and mussels) as well as the endemic species of Austria's flora and fauna were digitized and processed across institutions. Additionally, in 2024, a pilot study was conducted to document a complete workflow from the object to the DNA barcode (ABOL).
Endemics
Endemic species are represented across nearly all major taxonomic groups. In some groups, such as fungi, lichens, algae, and mosses, they are rare or entirely absent, whereas in others — including flowering plants, snails, beetles, and spiders — they constitute a substantial component of Austria’s overall species diversity.
Molluscs
Malacological reference collections provide valuable data for long-term observations and are, particularly within this group of organisms, one of the most important foundations for faunistic documentation and research.
ABOL
Development of workflows to link specimens, including their sequence data and DNA bank records, as well as associated digital images and metadata, making them accessible as part of the OSCA infrastructure.

Natural science collections document the development and current state of life and the Earth.
